How to measure a room for carpet and vinyl
- 1:Draw a floor plan of your room
Start by drawing a rough floor plan of your room. This doesn’t need to be to scale, but it should include all walls, doorways, and any alcoves or nooks that need flooring.
Make sure these measurements are exact and don't have any allowances - we'll take care of that later.
- 2:Measure the length of your room
Use the tape measure to measure the distance of the longest wall in the room from one end to the other (in metres). Note this down as the length of your room.
Ensure that you double check your measurement at different points of the room so that you have the correct length!
- 3:Measure the width of your room
This time, we'll do the same process but measure across the room to find the width measurement. Note this down as the width of your room.
- 4:Adding a buffer to your sizes
We recommend that you add a buffer to the measured sizes just in case of cutting mistakes or wastage. Add an extra 10% to your measurements by multiplying the measurement by 1.1. For example:
If your room is 4 metres long, multiplying this by 1.1 will mean that you need 4.4 metres of flooring.
- 5:Placing your order
You should now have measurements with wastage allowances for the length and width of your room. If you're ordering online, choose from the width and length dropdown options on the product page to get a custom fit carpet or vinyl perfect for your room!
If you're feeling unsure, call in to one of our nationwide stores and show your room plan and measurements to one of our expert staff.

- 5:Calculating the area of flooring needed
Flooring of these kinds are sold in packs, each of which cover a certain square meterage, so the next step we need to take is to find out the area of our room.
This is done by multiplying your width measurement and your length measurement, for example:
If your sizes (with buffer) are 4.4 metres and 3.3 metres, we would multiply 4.4 x 3.3 and get the result 14.52 square metres.
- 6:Placing your order
You should now have the area coverage required for your room. If you're ordering online, each product page allows you to input the measurements of your room to find out the amount of packs needed for your room!
