Flooring Superstore has launched its’ landmark 50th store in Hove, East Sussex. Originally a quiet fishing settlement surrounded by open farmland, Hove has grown into a beacon of human achievement – which is why we’ve chosen to celebrate there. We’re now also west of the pier, darling.
Chances are, you couldn’t really pinpoint Hove on a map. Not because the area is unworthy or forbidden, but because of Brighton’s dominance over British culture. Where Brighton is all tattoos, spouting Abba’s Eurovision win at the Brighton Dome, and screaming at seagulls in the rain, neighbouring Hove is far less frantic and – dare we say - a tad more refined. Think polite euphemisms rather than streetwise jargon.
Hove doesn’t feverishly screech through the tourist board seeking attention. Hove doesn’t subscribe to overt hipsterfication and mind-bogglingly heavy traffic. Instead, the streets are lined with Georgian crescents and Victorian grandeur; a Jane Austen novel reimagined by property developers with a penchant for handcrafted Farrow & Ball wallpaper.
The Hove area doesn’t need to be loud. It strives with quiet excellence. The lawns are manicured, the coffee comes with oat milk whether you asked for it or not, and there’s an ever-present sense that everyone owns at least one vintage bicycle and a Le Creuset casserole dish.
Alongside the artisan bakeries and curated art galleries, there’s an Instagrammable sheen – minus the influencer desperation that’s becoming so common in other cities. Rather, Hove is elegance with a smirk. It’s also where Adele called home. Where the language of cinema was perfected when Hollywood was still an anonymous LA suburb, and where you’ll find our landmark 50th store – for good reason.
We can certainly pinpoint Hove on the map. In fact, we’ve been keeping it for a special occasion; where the city’s vibe shares the same constructs as Flooring Superstore’s bespoke mantra and, now, that time has come.
Celebrating the big 5-0 in Hove
Fifty. Five-oh. It’s a biggie. We’ve come a long way since our first store was opened in Birtley during the summer of 2017; journeying from our HQ in Bishop Auckland across the nation, on our mission to make each house a home. It’s been one hell of an adventure so far.
Selecting a location for our landmark 50th store created no-end of debate at HQ, and of all the places we could have picked to plant this milestone flag, we chose Hove. Not Brighton. Not Worthing. Hove. And we didn't do this for "flooring store near me" status, either.
As an often-overlooked section of Britain, it would be easy to question that decision. Surely the likes of a sprawling and celebrated metropolis would better signal such a landmark occasion?
Our view is simple. Hove is a blueprint for how community should be done. The area boasts the kind of civic soul that you rarely find with contemporary society’s push towards autonomy. There’s unapologetic eccentricity, historical prominence, style, and people who retain a sense of institution. It’s the greatest aspects of what it truly means to be British. The people here know what they like, and also what they don’t. There’s no faffing around with false positives.
You don’t build a store in Hove by accident. You earn your place. And now that we’ve parked the Flooring Superstore wagon right here on the coast, we’re here to stay. It’s a community that we want to be part of, with our presence run by locals for locals.
The 50th Store: A milestone with meaning
Getting to 50 is a big deal. For us, that’s 49 other towns and cities before Hove, each one hand-picked, planned, built, staffed, stocked, and styled to perfection. So, when it came to this big round number, we knew it had to be somewhere with a bit of bite. Hove ticked every box.
Perhaps more than that, celebrating here feels right. Hove is a product of when residents care about where they live. They plant things. They paint things. They improve things – and that’s exactly what we’re about, too.

Hove isn’t just another dot on the map for us. It’s the Golden Jubilee of Flooring Superstore’s journey so far. The 50th chapter in a story that started with our ambitious CEO and a cargo container in the garden.

The pinnacle of hidden Britain
Hove is dripping with heritage and charisma. This is where Winston Churchill went to school, not far from where the notorious Hove smugglers opted to stash their contraband in St Andrew’s Church – just around the corner from the country’s first legal Casino; originally found on the seventh floor of the Metropole Hotel.
Hove has been hiding in plain sight. While Brighton takes the tourism limelight for the area, with everyone wittering on about that pier and its’ vegan sausage rolls, Hove has quietly radiated with a pure-bred brand of seaside swagger. There are more blue plaques on one Hovite street than most towns have in their entirety.
And now, between the drama of Goldstone Ground and the peace statue of the south coast’s largest seafront lawns, Flooring Superstore has set up shop as the bridge between home and community for local residents seeking a home-based glowup.
